History

In the early 1700's Broad Cove (now known as St. Philip’s) was part of the Parish of St. John's. Eventually Broad Cove was part of a Mission stretching from Holyrood to Cape St. Francis.

One of earliest headstones in the cemetery is of Robin Tucker who died in 1812.

The first church at Broad Cove and the church yard were consecrated on June 26 1848.

On November 20th, 1894 a new church (built on the partial foundation of the first church) was consecrated. The church bell was made in New York in 1903.

On Nov. 22 1914 Rev. Arthur E.E. Legge was inducted as the first rector of the Parish of Portugal Cove (including the church and community of St. Philip’s).

In 1964 a choir room was built in the St. Philip’s Church.

About 1974 the "Parish of Portugal Cove" was renamed to the "Parish of Portugal Cove/St. Philip's". By 1985 each congregation of Portugal Cove and St. Philip’s numbered around 350 families.

The St. Philip’s congregation became the Parish of St. Philip’s on July 1 1986, and a new rectory was built in the same year.

On Jan. 25 2004 the present new Anglican Church of St. Philip was dedicated.
